Attorney General Jay Nixon of Missouri closed down a website established by the White Separatist Haters Group who refunded funds for Hurricane Katrina victims. Nixon argued that this group is collecting funds there. This is just one of many Hurricane Katrina frauds on the Internet
According to the FBI, more than 2,000 websites are recruiting funds for hurricane · Katrina victims, most of which are fraud. The most popular sites are recruiting funds for the Red Cross and are misleadingly pretending to be like the Red Cross website. You can donate directly to the Red Cross on their website (redcross.org).
The Internet monitoring organization scambusters.org has identified several general ways that these Internet fraudsters used to seek funds for hurricane Katrina victims.
1 - Phishing scams
Many fraudulent websites with a legitimate charity's appearance and feel are recruiting funds for hurricane Katrina victims.
2 - Virus fraud
Hurricane "Katrina" E-mails are sent along with attachments claiming to contain pictures of victims. When an attachment is opened, a Trojan horse is placed on a computer designed to steal bank information.
3 - Dislike websites
The harassment group sets up a website on behalf of the hurricane "Katrina victim" and is looking for funds.
4 - Price based fraud
We provide unsolicited e-mails for a fee to find loved ones lost in Hurricane Katrina.
5 - chain fraud
E-mail chain letter that provides donation to Hurricane Katrina.

The best way to protect yourself is to give it directly to a known charity. CNN.Com has created a list of reputable charitable organizations donating to the help of Katrina victim (cnn.com/SPECIALS/2005/katrina/help.center/).
